Franois Couperin was the most important member of the illustrious Couperin family and was one of the leading composers of the French Baroque era. He is best known for his harpsichord works, all of which are found in the collection of more than 220 pieces entitled Pices de clavecin, consisting of four books.

Louis was evidently a very successful and influential composer, but he died young, in 1661, and most of his compositions remained unpublished until the 20th century. Some years after his death, the second of the two most important Couperins was born: Franois Couperin, nicknamed le Grand the Great . Although suffering from poor health Franois Couperin was born in Paris in 1668, the son of Charles Couperin ( ), the organist St Gervais in Paris. On his father's premature death the organist position was held by Lalande.
